Spirit Airlines to launch new website, mobile app

Ted Christie, current president of Spirit and its incoming CEO,  said the airline will launch a new website and a new mobile app in the next 30 to 60 days.

Christie said the new website will allow the Miramar-based airline (NYSE: SAVE) to moreeasily interact with and learn about its customers as they book tickets. That way, the airline can more knowledgeably customize offers and possibly increase revenues as they offer products patrons might like based on past purchases.

"If you are a frequent traveler on Spirit, and you know that you generally check a bag, and you like the big front seat, that should be offered to you sooner rather than later," he said. "The technology behind it will be very interactive with our consumer marketing department, so that they can make better promotional offers on the website."

Additionally, the airline's current app allows patrons to check in and provide a mobile boarding pass. The new app will allow customers to buy their ticket or upgrade their seats and add bags to their itinerary. They can enable the push notifications if they're interested in learning moreabout deals and flight updates.

Next: the airline will complete Wi-Fi connectivity to nearly 122 planes by the end of 2019. The first plane is being tested in Orlando. Then it will install Wi-Fi on the rest. In May, the Business Journalreported that the airline will sell high-speed internet access aboard its flights nationwide. The price would average $6.50 per trip for travelers who choose to buy the service.

As a part of the company-wide strategy to improve customer service, the company is also adding more airport kiosks, which people can use to check in, print their boarding pass and print their bag tag and tag the bag by themselves.

It's about improving the experience and making travel for our customers easier, Christie said.

Spirit, one of South Florida's largest public companies, has more than 800 employees at its Miramar headquarters.

The airline operates more than 500 daily flights to 70 destinations in the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean.
